Managing Falling Ice and Snow in Canadian Climates – Learning through Case Studies

Falling ice and snow from structures presents a significant challenge for building design in cold climate regions. The variables involved in the accumulation and subsequent shedding of snow and ice from a structure include building and feature geometry, thermal and surface characteristics, melt-water drainage paths, ambient air temperature fluctuations, solar radiation and wind forces. 

This session will present a wide range of case studies to illustrate the types of challenges and the range of solutions that have developed to manage the risks of falling ice and snow.

Albert Brooks

Senior Project Scientist - Microclimate, Rowan Williams Davies and Irwin (RWDI)

Albert is a Senior Project Scientist with RWDI`s Microclimate team. He is responsible for conducting wind tunnel testing for pedestrian comfort and snow related studies, including structural snow loading, snow drifting and falling snow and ice. Albert also manages research and development projects for the Microclimate team. Albert is a graduate of the University of Guelph`s Biological Engineering department and is a registered engineer intern in Ontario.
