From the Real World to the Digital… and Back: Digitization to Fabrication Workflows

Close-range digitization technologies accessible to architects such as 3d scanners and photogrammetry can create metrically and visually accurate computer models of virtually any object. Coupling these technologies with digital fabrication technologies like 3D printing, CNC routing and robotic milling allows for the development of hybrid digital/analogue design workflows. This session will introduce participants to workflows appropriate to architectural practice that lead from the digitization of models, objects, and building components, to the fabrication of prototypes and maquettes and ultimately to collaboration with fabricators in the creation of bespoke building components.

James is a PhD candidate at the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism and a researcher at the Carleton immersive Media Studio. Recently he became a founding partner of If Then Architecture Inc. His research focuses on coupling digitization technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetry with digital fabrication technologies like 3D printing, CNC routing and robotic milling.
