Indigenous Architecture in Canada over the Past 150 Years

This session will focus of the contemporary world of Indigenous architecture in Canada over the past 30 years and provide a context for the current buildings being produced with reference to historical precedents and the era of government prescribed buildings for Indigenous peoples.  Of particular interest will be the affects and after affects that prescribed architecture had on Indigenous people and how Indigenous people have developed ownership over their buildings emerging from this prescription. Participants will be exposed to a high level overview of historical Indigenous architecture in all climates within modern day Canada and end up in a discussion about the current state of contemporary Indigenous architecture.

Brian Porter, OAA, RAIC

Principal Architect, Two Row Architect

Brian Porter is an Indigenous architect from the Oneida Nation. He has been working Six Nations Reserve for the past 24 years where he has been the principal of Two Row Architect a solely aboriginally owned and operated architecture firm. Brian has worked all over Canada, the United States and many different First Nation Reserves.

Matthew Hickey, OAA, CaGBC

Project Architect, Two Row Architect

Matthew is an Indigenous Mohawk Architect from Six Nations Reserve. He completed his Masters in Architecture at the University of Calgary where he continued his research into Indigenous Architecture in North America and it's affects on contemporary building structures. Matthew is a LEED accredited professional and has been teaching LEED at Conestoga College for the past 6 years.
