This session will focus of the contemporary world of Indigenous architecture in Canada over the past 30 years and provide a context for the current buildings being produced with reference to historical precedents and the era of government prescribed buildings for Indigenous peoples. Of particular interest will be the affects and after affects that prescribed architecture had on Indigenous people and how Indigenous people have developed ownership over their buildings emerging from this prescription. Participants will be exposed to a high level overview of historical Indigenous architecture in all climates within modern day Canada and end up in a discussion about the current state of contemporary Indigenous architecture.
