John Brown is a registered architect in Alberta and a fellow of the RAIC. He is the founding Principal of Housebrand, an integrated practice that incorporates architecture, construction, real estate brokerage, and interior design into a vertically integrated service. He is also a co- founder of the Slow Home Movement an international advocacy platform devoted to increasing design quality in North America’s housing market. In 2003, John received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Award of Excellence for Innovation for his development of Housebrand. In 2009, he received a Leadership Award from Residential Architect Magazine in recognition of his work to increase public awareness about the value of design.

In addition to his private practice, John is a professor of architecture in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary and is currently serving as Associate Dean (Research + International). His research engages critical architectural practice, the role of the architect in the normative housing industry, and new forms of housing for seniors. In 2015, John’s age in place research was recognized with a City of Calgary Mayor’s Urban Design Award in Housing Innovation for the development of the Age-in-Place Laneway Housing Research Project. In 2016 he completed a PhD in age-in-place housing through the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. This research proposes new forms of age-in-place housing that combine mass customization and design democratization with digital monitoring/ sensing and next generation home-based medical support to create a new approach to housing for seniors.
