The Bank of Canada head office, a landmark institution near the Parliament buildings on Confederation Boulevard in Ottawa, is reopening in 2017 after a three-year renewal project.
This case study examines how the client and architects worked together to preserve the intrinsic architectural value of the building while meeting the contemporary programmatic and technical needs of a modern central Bank.
The Bank of Canada’s objectives were to transform its workplace; address life safety compliance; and achieve higher levels of sustainability and physical security, while respecting the vision and intent of both Arthur Erickson, design architect for the 1979 glass addition, and the classical centre building designed in the 1930s by Marani, Lawson and Morris.
The session explores how architects and clients can come together to identify the architectural and cultural significance of modern buildings and develop appropriate interventions, complemented by community outreach and effective project delivery.
