the SOCIAL ART of ARCHITECTURE- Design with Community

"Consult the community", you are told. How will you engage the community?  Can a community be engaged in design dialogue without the architect losing control of the design? See how noted architects used the communal responses in award winning designs.

Take part in an interactive workshop that engages delegates in co-design dialogue for the sustainable future. Three Co-Design artists sit with groups of delegates to collaboratively draw their ideas. A gallery of drawings is created and displayed to delegates, to view, and rate the drawings.

Founder & President, the Co-Design Group

Stanley King is the creator of the Co-Design process. He has won international award for his methods of public dialogue for citizens of all ages. Stanley has taught courses at Simon Fraser, University School of Environmental Education, University of Victoria, Faculty of Environment, and Architectural Technologies at The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. His work was featured in the NFB film "Chairs for Lovers". Principle author of the book Co-Design - A Process of Design Participation, (1989), co-author with Susan Chung of the Youth Manual for Sustainable Design.

Susan Ng Chung, B.Sc., Biology, B.Ed., M.Ed.(UBC)

Susan is a science educator specializing in environmental education and intergenerational mentorship. Susan has mobilized both
colleagues and youth to influence policy change at the Vancouver Board of Education. She is a catalyst for youth energy and passion in the environment. Her sustainability projects earned acknowledgement and support from: Vancouver Board of Education,
Metro Vancouver Parks, Canadian Teacher Magazine, Evergreen Learning Grounds, Green Bricks, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, Landscape Architects and the RAIC.

Drew Ferrari, Dip.Arch.Tech (Hons). BES (Arch), IAP2, MRAIC

Director, The Co-Design Group

Drew Ferrari is a creative associate with Stantec’s Community Development group. He brings over 35 years of diverse experience encompassing planning, architectural, interior, landscape, environmental graphics and graphic design projects.

Drew has undertaken public consultation and community engagement programs for transportation projects, urban design projects, small town economic development, tourism development, waterfront projects, senior’s and community facilities as well as for
parks and open spaces.

Drew is Associate and founding member of the Co-Design Group since 1979 and he is co-author of the book Co-Design: A Process of Design Participation, VNR, New York, 1989. Vancouver engagement projects include PNE/ Hastings Park, Woodward’s Building, Arbutus Lands and UBC Farm. He is also the Secretary for the BC Chapter of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2).
