Tour: Canadian War Museum

This national museum presents Canada’s military past and how it shaped the country. Its outstanding exhibitions explain Canada’s rich military history from earliest times to the present, featuring the experiences of people on the battlefields and at home. Designed by Toronto’s Moriyama & Teshima Architects in joint venture with GRC Architects, the Museum’s dramatic architecture is a showcase for its vast art and artifact collection. The extensive permanent exhibition highlights key events and defining moments in Canada’s military history.

Using the stunning new building as a backdrop, this tour shows how ordinary Canadians faced extraordinary challenges. The tour includes a look at War Museum’s world-class architecture, the collection of military art and dazzling exhibition galleries. It combines personal stories with important artifacts to reveal how our military heritage has affected all Canadians.

Peter Rankin, MRAIC

Associate, GRC Architects

Peter Rankin is an Associate at GRC Architects in Ottawa. During his 22 years of experience he has been involved in all stages of project design information delivery which includes IT based project design / implementation - an area that includes digital design, quality assurance, construction documents and contract administration. He is technically proficient and has developed expertise in digital design coordination and guidelines in order to manage and coordinate complex drawing production and team communication.

Emmanuelle van Rutten, B.Arch, OAA, OAQ, MRAIC, LEED AP BD+C

Director, Moriyama & Teshima Architect's Ottawa

Emmanuelle van Rutten is the Director of Moriyama & Teshima Architect's Ottawa office. She has worked on high-profile projects in the national capital region, including the Canadian War Museum, the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat, and the Visitor Welcome Centre Phase One on Parliament Hill in collaboration with IBI Group. Most recently, Emmanuelle led the Beaverbrook Library renovation and addition project for the Ottawa Public Library, as well as the renovation of the Canada History Hall at the Museum of History.

Emmanuelle graduated from the Carleton University School of Architecture with high distinction and the AIA Henry Adams Medal in 1998. She maintains a close relationship with her alma mater, now called the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, where she has taught various core design studios in addition to serving as a regular guest critic.  With a reputation as a talented designer and critic, fluidly communicating in both official languages, she was recently appointed as a panel member for the Ottawa Urban Design Review Panel. Since 2015, she’s also been the RAIC Regional Director for the regions of Ontario North, East and Nunavut.
