Understanding Role of Thermal Bridging and How to Effectively Design Assemblies That Minimize Energy Loss

Codes are pushing architects to design buildings that reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Government and utilities have a mandate to encourage energy conservation in commercial buildings and jurisdictions have been adopting increasingly more stringent building energy efficiency standards. It's imperative for architects to understand how thermal bridging occurs in different types of connections and what solutions can be utilize to minimize heat loss at these critical junction points.

Involved in the residential and commercial construction industry for seven years, his educational background includes a diploma in architectural technology from Mohawk College and a degree in civil engineering from McMaster University. Simpson represents Owens Corning on the North American Insulation Manufactures Association (NAIMA) and Ontario Home Builders Association (OHBA) technical committees. Through extensive educational background and developing in-field knowledge, Simpson is able to provide detailed solutions for building envelope design and acoustical assemblies.

Matthew Schiedel, OBEC, ASHRAE, CSC

Technical Manager, Thermafiber, Owens Corning Canada

Matthew Schiedel holds a BEng in Mechanical Engineering with experience in construction, research, energy modeling, and consulting focused on heat transfer and residential zero-energy buildings. A published author, winner of the 2013 US DOE Solar Decathlon Engineering Contest with Team Ontario and designer of over half a dozen CHBA Net Zero Energy homes, Matt joined Owens Corning in February 2016.
